Ice skating tips?

whenever I go ice skating, I dont fall but its hard for me to go anywhere! i know you do one foot at a time and kinda put ur weight on the foot and push out diagonally but it seems I barely go anywhere...any advice?

Ice skating tips?
Try to push out with the inner edge of your blade and more towards your heel rather than toe pick. Keep your skating knee bent and your free leg straight back following through with emphasis on pushing out on the heel.

When you're doing the strokes, one knee will always be bent and your head shouldn't be bobbing up and down. This will be the most efficient way to spend your energy.

Remember to have the boot fit properly with lacing moderately tight. You don't want to be collapsing to your inside edges with the skating foot.

And finally, rental skates suck! Their blades are never sharp enough. Maybe you could request for one with sharper blades.

Good luck and hope that helps!
Reply:It's sad but true.......rental skates are as dull as butter knives.

When you get a pair of skates at the rink, run your finger lightly across the edge...if it doesn't feel like a VERY sharp knife like your best kitchen knife, ask for another pair...and another pair until you find one that feels sharp..(don't even bother to try them on unless you think you could seriously lose blood....they rotate how often skates are sharpened...............

no skater either in hockey or figure, can skate without an edge..it's what you push against to get momentum....

If you're loving the sport go on ebay and find yourself a pair of Reidel's in your size.(generally one size larger than shoe size, your toe should touch the skate closer than a shoe_..then get them sharpened before you step on the ice......... VOILA

your movement problem solved...now you have to learn the snowplow to stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Reply:Do you have hockey skates or figure skates?Figure skates allow you to cheat a little bit by driving off with the picks. It's important to remember that skates are sharpened with a concave shape that gives you an inner and an outer edge. When you are driving off from a start with your inside edge on the trailing skate(the one that's back)You should try to have a slight slant in your leading skate,so that it is riding on one edge.Transfer your weight to the leading skate as you come to the end of your push.Push,lift,glide.With practice you will learn to do this instinctively.Beginners have difficulty keeping their skates tracking because of these edges.Have a friend who can skate help you . Make sure that you have well-fitted skates and keep them sharp.Have fun.
