Just 2 ice skating/boot questions.?!.?

1) When I tie my laces they seem to big, because the laces hangdown below the blade line [there dragging on the ice] and when i still them in the boot they dig into me. What should I do?

2) I can't skate backwards! Grr! I try as hard as I can, but for some reason I just cant! Any advice? Thankz!

Thanks!

Just 2 ice skating/boot questions.?!.?
1) Don't worry, my laces are also big and loose. A good way you can do so they dont hang like that is to tuck the loops in to the laces near the front. (sorry if that made any sense. =/) Well, another way is to wear tights that go over the boot, that way the laces stay in put and dont hang around. And if none of those work, you can just buy new laces, and re-lace your skates. However, do not buy laces too short, a little longer is good.

2) As for skating backwards...all you need is practice. Try keeping your hands out for balance and start slow. You can also try swizzles.

Well, hope that helped! Best of luck toward you and your skates! =]
Reply:Double tie them meaning after u tie the bow, take the two loops but instead of double knotting them, take each loop and fold it in half then tie it so that ure left with a tiny bow. does that make sense? as for skating backwards, it'll come with practice. Try bending ure knees and standing straight will help a lot.
Reply:Did your laces come with your skates? If not, maybe they're the wrong size. Take them to a pro shop and ask them to help you get the right size (they come in different lengths).

Otherwise, there are a few things you can try. First, defiantly double knot...that should take up a little of the extra. While it's not my favorite thing to do, lace your skates up, just tie a knot, wrap the laces around the back of your boot and then tie them (and double knot) in front. That way you do run the chance that the part of your laces that are wrapped around the back of your boot will slide up and over the top of your boot and rub on the back of your leg. Depending on how much extra you have, maybe try doing your normal bow, double knot them, then take the "bunny ears" and loop them over the hooks on your skates (so they cover all of the hooks). This holds your knot tight, holds it in place and keeps the ends from being loose.

Ahh, backwards skating....took me awhile too when I started. Start out trying backward "wiggles," sounds like something little kids do, but it's fun. With your feet close together, shake your bum/hips back and forth -- I tell kids to do the "hula" -- and use your arms too. It sort of looks like you're dancing, but all that wiggling pulls you backwards. Your upper and lower body will twist opposite each other. If you are leaning forward or watching your feet, this will pull your whole body forward and make it harder to get moving backwards. Bending your knees will also help.

Once you've got that down, try backward swizzles (everyone calls them something different). Start with your toes together and at the same time push out with your feet to pull your heels together. You'll make a sort of football/circle shape. To keep going, just put your toes together again (pointing inwards) and pull back towards your heels. You can connect them all together and keep moving. Pretend like you're trying to skate around a large beachball. Unless you have super long legs -- which I know I don't :) -- you have to bend your knees to get all the way around. In addition to all that foot business, keep your upper body up (don't watch your feet!!) and arms out for balance.

Good luck! :)
Reply:1 - get shorter laces at the pro shop.

2 - bend ur knees! its ver important i still have trouble bending my knee sometimes!
Reply:1) You can either buy shorter laces in your pro shop or online. In the meantime, what I do when I tie kids' skates and there is too much lace, is I lace them back down the eyelets. Tieing them around the ankles isn't usually a good idea, because the laces will often slip up and cut into the ankle. Same with tucking them into the boot - and it's not comfortable!

2) Keep practing! Are you doing crossovers or just backwards swizzles? Either way, a couple good, general tips are to make sure that you are standing up straight. If you lean forward you will go up on your toe picks. Along the same lines, you should be pushing with your heels. Think of keeping your heels touching the ice the whole time, and that will help to keep you from going on your toes.
