How does one ice skate?

OK, tough one for you guys to explain. Going ice skating for the 1st time next week and I have no clue what I'm to do. Chances are grace and dignity are flying out of the window so any tips would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

How does one ice skate?
I had lessons for a year and a half during which time i had the most amazing falls ... so here are my tips

1) If you think you will fall you will - that wierd flapping position will send you head over and will not help you keep your balance

2) Relax and try the following.

3) To move forward you need to zig zag or sway side to side. Push with right foot with left foot say pointing at 10 o'clock, glide on the left foot. Alternate your pushing foot - do the same with pushing with the left foot with the right foot pointing to 2 o'clock and repeat

4) To move backwards, simply push in front of you with your toes in the same manner with a slight twist in your hips.

5) To stop, point your toes to the same spot 2 feet ahead of you and glide to a halt. Bend your knees or you will flip.

6) If feeling more adventurous, perform 3) but with a running pace. To stop you will need to point both feet to the side and cover some poor sole in snow.

Whatever you do enjoy!
Reply:Seems to be one of them things that you manage to pick up fairly quickly with a bit of practice. Most people are pretty crap including myself but don't worry you won't be the only one. Stopping is the thing because it involves a fairly confident move and it's oh so easy to be a bit too woosy and not manage to stop at all, but it's all in the game......enjoy
Reply:On ice , with ice skates
Reply:carefully
Reply:Very carefully
Reply:As one who has suffered, tips are 1) take several pairs of socks, because the boots are going to cripple your feet. 2) Tighten the boots up as tight as you can bear, to support your ankles, 3) wear gloves coz you will fall over. 4) Keep to the edge so you can grab on for support. 5) Wear padded clothes if you can to protect knees and elbows.

However, in hindsight, I would say spend some money on a professional basic lesson, and you will enjoy it so much more.
