How do you teach kids to ice skate for hockey?

My son is dying to play hockey, but he doesn't know how to skate. He "runs" on the ice instead of skating. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to teach him to skate? What I am doing is not working and his prehockey class coaches aren't getting through either.

Thanks

There are often learn to skate classes at a rink... but it sounds like it's a personality thing, where he does not realize that he's not doing it right. I would tell him that unless he starts to skate right you won't et him play hockey. if he wants to play badly enough, he'll learn.
Reply:Get him to pull someone that can skate, they won't get anywhere with the running style, he will have to bend his knees and use his inside edges, the person being pulled can help him with his balance to begin with as well. This technique is used with strong skaters as well for devolping a strong stride by getting the person being pulled to put the brakes on.
Reply:Let that boy run! If he has the love, the rest will naturally follow! Show him the ice and enjoy his interest.
Reply:bend your knees, push to the sides.

im guessing he is really young, i started when i was 3 and pushed around a cone for months. an orange construction cone is good because it prevents the feet from going forward (prevents the running motion because the cone is in the way).

but i did not start trying until i saw my older sister get put on a team and she got a jersey. i wanted a jersey so i learned how to skate. maybe an incentive program would work.
Reply:My suggestion to you would be to let him run on his skates.Obviously he is a younger child. Balance is what makes good skating, and if he feels comfortable at this stage running, then let him run.

As he becomes more secure, you may try things like pushing a goal frame around the rink., or pulling a tire. With this, he will be developing his edges and consequently his stride.

Let him run, it will cometo him soon enough.
