Is ice-skating dangerous?

Is ice-skating dangerous?

Has anything happened to you?What?

Is it dangerous in general and why is it?

Is ice-skating dangerous?
As with most other sports, yes, it can be potentially dangerous.

For me, the worst was falling straight down onto the ice one time and cracking my knee cap. I've fallen a zillion times on my knees but that time I guess I hit at the "wrong" spot. I've also gotten toepicked on the side of my knee by a friend who fell and kicked up. I've had tons of minor injuries.

Things I have walked away from uninjured, but could have been worse are incidents like: colliding with other skaters - public or advanced skaters, tripping over holes/bumps in the ice, going on the ice forgetting to take my skate guards off (slip!), clicking blades while ice dancing with a partner (almost tripping) -lots more.

But even though there are a lot of potential things that can happen, we take those risks and continue to skate. That can happen with anything you do in life - either be afraid of it, or face it.

Here are some articles about it, particular to figure skating (you asked about ice skating . . . that also covers other skate sports like hockey or speed skating which has it's own share of risks).

Danger of Pairs Figure Skating (video, may be hard to watch)

Reply:I split my chin open once, requiring 4 stitches. In general it's probably not all that dangerous, but it's definitely more dangerous than a pillow fight. The only reason it is dangerous is because you're scooting around on sharp blades on hard ice and you could fall down or run into someone. I always wondered if it ever happened that someone fell down and had their finger sliced off when another skater couldn't stop in time.
Reply:Well, people get hurt from playing any sports, even ice-skating. Nothing bad has happened to me but something has happened to my cousin. She went to the national ice-skating competition in Paris and her partner (AKA her boyfriend) were doing this trick and the blade of the skate on the guy's skate whipped her head and she just set there crying and bleeding. It is dangerous because of the blade and you know why it's kinda dangerous but I really recommend the sport, it is very fun
Reply:I would say that every sport is dangerous.... For beginners it is always hard to start as they would experience the ice very slippery. If you want to learn to ice skate I would take a friend for the first couple of times... and then see if you would like it. If you would want to continue ice skating by some good quality boots. In general for beginners it is hard but as you get used to the ice you will find it a lot better and easier and would not want to get away for the ice rink.
Reply:YES. alot of people think its not that dangerous, truth is, it is very dangerous, personally, nothing THAT bad has happened to me, but ive seen people carried off in stretchers, one of my friends almost died. he now has short term memory loss and can't remember anything that happened after he put his skates on. i hav a friend who has been to the hospital more times than her brother who plays football. yea ice skating IS dangerous,
Reply:it is amongst one of the dangerous sports out there yes. throughout my career i cant say i had any major injuries (except for the damaged achillies) which stopped my skating. i got my toe pick caught in the back of my shin once and dug my blade in many places on my legs but nothing broken. i knocked my self out once for falling on my head!!!

but i did more damage with my horse!! braking my finger!

hope this doesnt put you off it, cause if you forget about the dangerous stuff skating is so elegant and beautiful to watch and fun to do.
Reply:Its not dangerous if you no what you are doing and don't mess around on the ice. If u say start being silly then u will most likely fall. You have to have confidence. Nothing has ever happened to me.
Reply:well like all sports it is. Just being careful and wereing good skates will help but like most people you will fall and get hurt so just be careful.
Reply:if you have weak ankles yes it is.
Reply:haha only if your unco.
